It’s hurricane season here in sunny Florida, June through November. It’s finally sunny again here after weeks of constant rain, so it’s easy to become complacent about storm prep. But, you never know what mother nature is going to bring to the party. Be safe, be prepared.
In my last post I talked about some hurricane and storm prep advice based on my past experience living in a hurricane prone area. Read all about it in my post Hurricane Storm Survival & Preparedness Tips .
One important item that I mentioned in my last post is to get together a Hurricane Storm Survival & Preparedness Kit. You can use these guidelines for any storm, power outage, or emergency event, be it a hurricane, blizzard, tornado, earthquake, or the zombie apocalypse. Please keep in mind that these are just my ideas and to consult a more official source for a complete list. You may be able to use your kit at home or may have to take it with you to a safe place until it’s OK to go home. These are some of the things I keep around the house (OK, my tiny condo) or you can keep the items together as a kit for just in case.
- Water – the water where I live tastes bad enough without it being compromised by a storm or power outage. It’s has that icky beach water flavor that just will not be muted. I have tried filters, purification systems, and flavorings. So, I hate to admit it, but I do buy all of my drinking water. As a result I always have a supply of gallon jugs of water. I just make sure that my supply never dwindles. If I know a storm may be coming I fill my plastic jugs that would normally be headed to recycling with the icky tap water for cleaning, and the all important bathing and teeth brushing. Officials suggest having one gallon of water per person per day. I personally like to think that my stash of Diet Coke counts towards this goal…
- Food – non-perishable food that doesn’t need heating or too much prep. One of my faves is peanut butter sandwiches. Mmmm, childhood lunch memories. Crackers, tuna packets, nuts, non-refrigerated fruits like apples and bananas, granola or energy bars, and cookies are good, easy things to have on hand (yes, cookies, you don’t need to be completely deprived!) Have at least a few days supply of food on hand. Even if you could drive to a friend’s house with power for a meal, do you really want to play Frogger trying to cross busy intersections with no traffic lights? Daunting.
- Lighting – I have a battery powered lantern that I love that goes a long way to lighting a whole room. I also have a few flashlights and a few (OK, maybe a little more that just a few) yummy scented candles. Just don’t forget the extra batteries and matches!
- Real books – made of paper. The old-fashioned kind. I love to read and need something to do while waiting it out. I don’t want to waste hours of my Kindle Fire or phone power on books when they make that easy no-power paper alternative.
- First Aid Supplies & Meds – band aids, antibiotic ointment, ibuprofen, tummy meds, and extra prescription meds.
- Toiletries – for looking good and smelling good. Dry shampoo, wipes, tissues, deodorant (seriously, everyone will thank you when the A/C is out).
- Nifty bag to put all of your supplies in. This will make things a lot easier to take if you have to spend the storm somewhere else besides home.
